Description: POSITION TITLE: Mechanical Contact Engineer DIVISION/DEPARTMENT/GROUP: Technical LOCATION: Torrance Refinery REPORTING TO: Mechanical Engineering Supervisor KEY DELIVERABLES The Mechanical Contact Engineer provides mechanical engineering support (primarily for fixed equipment) to their respective Business Team with the objectives of improving safety, environmental, reliability, profitability, and expense management. Key deliverables include: - Engineered solutions that include resolution of failure root cause meeting company and industry standards - Identification and resolution of reliability improvement opportunities including repeat failures, effective Equipment Strategies, risk based work selection for large turnarounds, and leadership of reliability subteams - Troubleshooting and emergency support for maintenance and operations - Incident investigations that identify root causes and result in effective recommendations to prevent recurrence - Documentation of all analysis and engineered changes (including updates of controlled documentation) KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain a vigilant focus on safety and enable others to do the same Perform engineering analysis of inspection findings (e.g. Fitness for Service) Engineer safe, reliable, cost effective solutions Conduct field visits and verifications of engineering solutions. Stay abreast of and apply industry codes, company standards, best practices, and programs in engineered solutions Identify, justify, and push for reliability and mechanical integrity improvements Assist inspectors and materials engineers in predicting failures and proactively provide resolutions Utilize Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) and risk assessment methodology to support recommendations and assist organization in prioritization of work Maintain effective lines of communication across the plant including the inspection group, maintenance, operations, process engineering, etc. Keep an up-to date prioritized worklist, and use it to effectively communicate status of work and commitments Provide documentation and drawing updates for equipment revisions and repairs Provide leadership and compliance with Management of Change guidelines Lead reliability and other subteams for area (as assigned) Contribute to Equipment Strategies that provide cost-effective, innovative plans for highly reliable, safe, low cost operations and optimize turnaround intervals and equipment downtimes Contribute to effective networking activities by staying abreast of postings, answering calls for and requesting assistance, and developing and implementing Best Practices Participate in the effective planning and execution of turnarounds via participation in Risk Based Work Selection, meeting engineering milestones, and support during the downtime with timely and accurate engineering of discovery work Develop capital Project Development Requests with clear justification (as assigned) Participate in / lead incident investigations that get to the real root cause and provide relevant recommendations to prevent reoccurrence in a cost effective manner Clarify, reassess, and adjust Equipment Reliability Operating Envelopes as issues arise Develop reliability improvement plans and engineer solutions for key offenders (as assigned) SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING BSME Degree with 2 years or more work experience in refining industry preferred Mechanical aptitude Ability to conduct site/field visits Good problem solving skills Strong communication skills (verbal and written) Ability to manage a large workload and changing priorities Basic understanding of engineering drawings Good computer skills Working knowledge of industry codes and company standards Understanding of fixed equipment design, construction, and operating principles Understanding of refinery reliability tools, systems and objectives Understanding of refinery equipment failure modes, corrosion mechanisms, and inspection techniques Understanding of refinery business drivers and the use of Life Cycle Cost Analysis Understanding of risk based decision making, risk assessments and available tools and resources Good working knowledge of work management, engineering, inspection, and Process Department procedures and priorities Strong knowledge of safety guidelines and procedures KEY PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS/BEHAVIORS Acquiring and Maintaining Job / Professional Knowledge Adaptability to time pressures and changing priorities Communication Skills Comprehension, Analytical, and Evaluation Skills Coordination and Teamwork Initiative and Self Monitoring Planning / Organizing Own Work Quality of Work Quantity of Work Safety Awareness ()
